A few days ago, I was sent a copy of Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts on Blu-ray combo pack to watch and review. In this newest movie, Batman teams up with Green Arrow, Flash, Nightwing and Red Robin to take on the Animilitia. The Animilitia is a villainous group composed of Silverback, Cheetah, Killer Crock and Man-Bat, & led by Penguin. Penguin also has a pack of cybernetic animals to help him out as well. Who will win the showdown?
This one is based off the new Batman toy line that is out, and I think is based in its own universe. A lot of the designs, tech, & landscape remind me strongly of Batman Beyond…which is pretty good since that was a great show. Also adding in that extra Batman Beyond vibe is Will Friedle (Terry McGinnis/Batman), who voices Nightwing. It’s also a bit of an origin story for Penguin (voice by the great Master Shake himself, Dana Snyder), who is a new villain in this story. He is introduced to Bruce & Oliver at a fund raiser, during which he shows off his robotic creations to the attendees (inadvertently giving himself away to the heroes since they had already fought with them once). He then uses them to scare off the guests after getting fed up with being made fun of behind his back.
The story is pretty good and I loved the banter between Nightwing & Flash. Red Robin was also great for comic relief too. As I mentioned earlier, the design for Gotham is very futuristic, with flying cars & huge video boards. They is also the added easter egg of Batman testing out a prototype of the Batman Beyond suit at the start of the movie.
Overall, it’s an enjoyable movie & I look forward to the sequel that will be out later this year. The combo pack I received also came with an exclusive Fire Bat toy (which my daughter has since squirreled away), and is also available on DVD & Digital HD. It will be available on May 12th.
I received the above mentioned product for free to help facilitate my review. All opinions are 100% my own.
