Product Review – ManGrate

June 13, 2014

mangrate1 Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

Last week, I was sent a ManGrate starter set. ManGrate is a cast-iron cooking grate for your grill. Each grate weighs 8 pounds, is 15-inches long by 4 1/4 inches wide and measure 1 3/8 inches thick, & cooks using radiant heat. You place them sided by side, and can use lay them horizontally or vertically. The set I received had two grates and a cleaning brush.

I was very interested in trying these out since we do so much cooking on our smoker grill. I surprised my husband with them as an early Father’s Day gift & he was very eager to use them right away. I picked up two inexpensive steaks at the store. They were medium thickness and usually end up a little tough no matter how you cook them. After seasoning the grates (which only took about 10 minutes), my husband seasoned the steaks and tossed them on.

We normally cook steaks medium rare so they didn’t take too long. My husband said right away that the steaks didn’t stick at all and had beautiful grill marks. Once they were plated, I took the first bite. I couldn’t believe the taste! They were cooked perfectly, retained all of the juice, & were delicious. You would have never thought that they were cheap steaks. My husband already wants to pick up a few more grates so that we have a larger cooking surface.mangrate2

Overall, these are phenomenal! They made a huge difference with how the steaks turned out. The kit we got is $82.99 (+ shipping), and is totally worth it. You can buy additional grates starting at $29.99 (+ shipping). In fact, right now you can save 10% off you ordered using the code MGREVIEW. You can purchase the grates at the ManGrate website.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

WOW! Just WOW. Let me tell you that I have had a checkered history with this company. My last order was 5 weeks overdue. I called, I emailed. No answers. Finally I contacted my bank and disputed the charge on my debit card. I won and the balance was refunded to me. I don’t know why, but I decided to give them one final chance to have me as a customer. I ordered using a different card. I didn’t make an account this time. My order arrived within like 3 days. I sanded, filed the valleys, and sanded again the Mangrates. I soaked them in Dawn dishsoap and bleach for several hours. I then rinsed them off and sanded them again. I seasoned them on a high-pressure burner using grape seed oil. Then I put them on my grill to bake at about 520 for an hour. after that I oiled them again and closed the lid for a london broil steak. Yeah I know not such a great cut. I dry rubbed the steak with Montreal seasoning and rosemary from my garden, with just a light coating of grape oil to make it stick. I wasn’t expecting much from all my preparations. What a mistake I made! I purposely overcooked the steak to well done, no pink at all. I hate well done and never cook steaks this way. I just wanted to experiment and see what happened. What happened was magical, mystical, other-worldly. It was the most juicy and delicious well-done steak that I have ever had in my life! And this was a London Broil, not a porterhouse or ribeye. The way that Mangrates cooked that steak was beyond description. It’s not hype. It’s not marketing. These grates take the grilling to the next five levels and then some. I have never had such a delicious, well-cooked cheap steak in my life. My mouth was open and my jaw was dropped half the afternoon. I can’t believe that such a simple addition to my bbq could have that much of an impact. I am telling you the honest truth. If you sand, clean, and season these grates properly then you will have the most spectacular steak that you have ever grilled, even on the first burn. I hate the company but I love the product. It’s the real-deal. It’s not hype. Even well-done steaks end up super moist and delicious with these grates … even with cheap cuts. I was blown away. I will never cook on anything else from now on.
