No yard is complete without trees. They make your yard look better, provide natural shade, & a home for birds and other outdoor critters. In order to maintain your trees, it’s important to care for them aside from just watering them. Primarily, you need to be able to trim branches. Trimming the branches helps promote new growth & also helps keep branches away from areas where you don’t want them…like power lines or directly over your house.
When trimming, never remove more than ¼ for the tree’s crown. Also, side branches should be at least 1/3 smaller than the trunk. Most importantly, keep your tools sharp. Sharp tools create cleaner cuts and reduce the change of accidents. You can get more info on techniques and tools at Sherrill Tree.

My wife and I have this tree in our front yard that we’re wanting to prune so it can grow better during the Spring. The problem is is that we aren’t sure on how to do this. That being said, I really appreciate you giving me some insight on things I can do to properly prune it. I’ll make sure I follow your tips and see how well it turns out. Thanks a ton for the help.
It’s a good point you make when you said that trimming trees is a great way to promote new growth. Maintaining the tree is important to its health and to the safety of what’s around it like you brought up. It might be best to hire a professional if you are unsure of how to properly trim a tree.
Great advice, our yard needs some proper trimming and these tips are very helpful, thanks for sharing this!

Rogue tree branches can definitely pose a big hazard if they’re growing into power lines or too close to your roof. Maintaining branches with pruning will prevent a lot of accidents. Thanks for sharing!
