In order to have a good, productive day, you need a good night’s sleep. Being rested became all the more important for me since having a child…especially now that my daughter is four and a little bundle of never-ending energy. I have suffered from insomnia for years, and it got worse right after my daughter was born. My doctor gave me sleeping pills, but they only helped so much. The hardest part for me is being able to relax long enough for the pills to kick in. I spent hours tossing and turning trying to get comfortable. This not only kept me up, but my husband as well. Eventually, I decided to change up the bed a bit to make it more comfortable for me.
The first thing I did was get a pillow. At the time, the pillow I was using wasn’t all that good. It was an inexpensive one from the store. I had gotten a set of down pillows for Christmas the year before, but hadn’t used them yet. I tried one out on the couch one day while watching television and liked it. I bought an allergy pillow cover (one that sips closed) to help keep dust out of the pillow, and started using it.
The next thing I did was buy a few sets of nicer sheets. I prefer Jersey sheets because they are soft, and my husband likes the flannel sheets. Both sheets have their drawback though. The Jersey sheets seem to wear out faster for us. In fact, the last set I had ended up with holes down at the end of the bed. The flannel is great during winter & we use them all the time, but they are too sticky during the summer. We ended up getting a set of white bedding. The thread count was 300, so it was soft but sturdy. It was defiantly a lot better than what we had, and we’ve since gotten another set that is 700 count.
The last thing I switched out was our comforter. We’ve had a very nice one that my parents got us shortly after we got married. It’s great for when it’s colder, but is too hot during the spring and summer. We went through several throws and didn’t like any of them. I eventually found one that is thick like our other, but is made of thinner material that is very soft to the touch. The filling is also light and is breathable. We are able to keep cool with it, and it’s very comfortable.
With the three changes I made, I’ve been able to get to sleep faster. The bed is snuggly now and it doesn’t take anywhere near as long to get comfortable. I do still have nights that I simply can’t sleep, no matter what I do, but they are a lot less frequent now than what they were before. If you have the same problems I do getting to sleep at night, it is worth trying out. If you are not sure where to start, check out The White Company. They have lots of bedding, plus all sorts of household items as well.
