I’ve tested many items in the two years that I’ve been publishing this blog. I’ve tested various food products, but nothing prepared me for Skillit Bacon Jam. According to their website, bacon is mixed with several other spices and then “rendered” down into their spread. The company started as a street vendor in Washington State, and has since branched out into a dinner and selling their spreads online & in some stores.
Now, I love bacon and I would eat it with just about everything if I could. I’ve seen this listed for review on Tomoson for a long time, and finally allowed morbid curiosity to win out. I was hoping for, at best, something delicious that we could all enjoy. That wasn’t what I got . . . not by a long-shot.
First of all, I would like to say that the picture of the container on Tomoson is quite nice. In fact, it’s the picture that I used above. Incidentally, they do not show you the actual bacon spread. There is good reason for that, apparently. The thing is, Skillet Bacon Jam looks as though someone put some bacon in their mouth, chew it for at least it hour, spit into a container, then put the lid and label on it. My husband took one look at it and said that there was no way he was ever going to try it. Yes, it’s that bad. Take a look for yourself:

While it does have a bacon smell to it, it’s more like the imitation bacon bits you get for salads. The texture is…well…it gives me a shiver/tingle that is very much the opposite of the one Chris Matthews gets from President Obama. It wouldn’t be too bad if it was an actual jelly-type spread, however, its current consistency nearly made me throw up. I wouldn’t even cook with it. Surprisingly, it really does taste like bacon, if you can keep from gagging on it long enough to get a good taste. Old, overcooked bacon….but bacon nonetheless.
Overall, this might make a neat ‘joke gift’, but it’s not going to be something that a lot of people are going to want to eat. There are some people who use it in recipes, but, as I said earlier, I’m not about to try. The site also carriers other ‘rendered’ items as well, including assorted types/flavors of shrimp. If you’re curious and want to try it for yourself, you can visit the Skillet website or email them.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
