I was recently sent a copy of In the Belly of Jonah, a mystery novel by first-time author Sandra Brannan. The main character, Liv “Boots’ Bergen finds herself involved in the case of a grotesque serial killer after he murders one of her employees. As she gets closer to the truth, she and everyone she knows becomes targets.
The story is fast-paced and hooks you from the very first page. The characters are likeable, especially Liv. Mrs. Brannan was able to create a strong female character who is believable, and not some sort of superwoman. Liv is smart and strong, but she is also a bit reckless…which is what gets her into trouble. Mrs. Brannan is also able to explain out the finer details of the mining industry and make it completely interesting. Now, I will warn you, the murders and descriptions of the murder scenes are very graphic and not for the faint of heart. However, I think that is one of the things I like most about the book. Your able to get a clear picture of what’s happening in your head, making for a more enjoyable read.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was very well written and kept me engaged through the whole story. I look forward to reading more books by Mrs. Brannan in the future and to see how her writing style develops. In the Belly of Jonah is available in both paperback and Kindle on Amazon.
I received the above book for free from Greenleaf Book Group LLC.
good book review! I’ve never heard of that book before; and since I’m a book-a-holic I will definitely need to check it out! lol
