Adding Fiber to Your Diet with Kellogg’s FiberPlus Cereal

June 21, 2011

As a stay at home mom, I’m constantly busy. I spend a better part of my day chasing a toddler around the house, and can never seem to get caught up on laundry and other housework. One of the major things that has gotten away from me is my diet. I ate very well during my pregnancy, but it completely fell apart after I had my daughter. For quite a while I was almost always skipping breakfast, eating junk food with lunch, and then eating way too much at dinner. Now that my daughter is starting to get a little older, I’ve been determined to set a better eating example for her…so I’m working on going back to my pregnancy diet.

A good balanced diet consists of many things. You need to be taking in good amounts of calcium, protein, iron, and fiber. I’ve been working on limiting my portions and counting the amount of carbs that I’m taking in. I have done okay so far, but I haven’t been getting anywhere near enough fiber.

Fiber is important in your diet since it can help lower the risk for heart disease, breast cancer, and colon cancer. For most women, you would need to eat at least 2 cups of vegetables and 1 1/2 cups of fruit everyday to get the recommended amount. I’m not too big on vegetables and the price of fruit has been ridiculous lately. Thankfully, Kellogg’s has come to the rescue with FiberOne cereals.

Over the past few days, I’ve been trying out two cereals: Berry Yogurt Crunch and Cinnamon Oat Crunch. Both of these cereals offer between 35 to 40% of your daily fiber. When I first received the cereal, I decided right away to try the Berry Yogurt Crunch first because the picture on the box looks tasty. Now, I’m not a big cereal person and will usually eat it dry. But since it has the berry clusters in it, I decided to add milk. I think that it was one of the best cereals I’ve ever had. You can clearly taste the berries and yogurt, but it’s not overpowering, and the flakes have a slight sweetness to them. I had to stop myself from eating more than two bowls.

The second cereal, the Cinnamon Oat Crunch, didn’t seem to draw my attention as much as the other had. On first glance, it looked pretty similar to Cheerios so I had my doubts as far as taste goes. Yet, I was once again surprised at how good it tasted. It doesn’t have that weird cardboard taste to it that you sometimes get with Cheerios and it was the perfect balance of cinnamon and sweetness. It also tasted good with milk, but I think I prefer it dry. My husband and daughter also liked it.

Overall, I was fairly impressed with the cereal. I definitely recommend both of these cereals. They are the perfect addition to any diet. You can get a good portion of your daily fiber needs out of the way with something that tastes great. I personally liked the Berry Yogurt Crunch the best. Also, Kellogg’s also has other items in it’s FiberPlus line as well. You can get more information about all of the FiberPlus items at the Kellogg’s website.
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free from Kellogg’s. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
